Coaching in Los Angeles

Plainly: nobody on this team is based in southern California, we keep no space here, and unless your company flies us out the coaching happens on a call. What we can offer this market that is not generic is a genuine track record in front of cameras rather than a claim to one. Laurie has been interviewed on the Today Show and by Oprah, quoted in the Wall Street Journal, and featured in Women’s Health, and coaching people through media appearances has been part of the practice for decades.

That matters more here than in most places, because this is a market with an unusually well-developed instinct for when somebody is performing badly. Entertainment and its adjacent industries — production, agencies, gaming, the enormous creator economy — sit alongside aerospace, health systems and a large technology sector, and they share one inherited standard: everyone has watched enough professional on-camera work to notice, instantly and without being able to say why, when a person on a screen is uncomfortable being looked at.

The coaching consequence is that the usual fixes are not enough. Structure and message discipline still matter, but so does what your face is doing while somebody else is talking, where you look when the question is hostile, and how you begin an answer you have not finished thinking about. Those are trainable — they are competencies in the system, not gifts — and they are the ones people in this market most often arrive already knowing they need.

How the sessions run

Video is the default and the three-hour gap from the east coast is the only real complication, which we solve by scheduling rather than by heroics: early-morning Pacific slots for anyone who wants to be finished before the day starts, late-afternoon for anyone who does not. Camera work is coached on camera, which means the session and the skill are the same medium — you review your own footage instead of taking somebody’s word for it.

Camera, stage, or both

For interviews, press, panels and anything with a lens on it, the page you want is media training. For a keynote, a conference slot or an internal event with a stage and a clicker, public speaking coaching is the better fit. Plenty of people book both, because the two audiences reward opposite instincts.

Underneath either sits the same set of nonverbal competencies — facial expression and contact among them — which is the part of the work that a camera makes unforgiving and a large room forgives.
