Coaching in Washington DC

The disclosure first, because this market of all markets should get one: we are not based in the District, we hold no clearance, and nothing on this page should be read as a claim to have prepared anyone for testimony or for a regulatory proceeding. That is specialist work and other people do it. What we do is the underlying craft — being understood, being credible, and holding a room — for leaders whose working life happens to be conducted in front of audiences like these.

The characteristic problem in this city is a split audience. An association conference, a research briefing, a coalition meeting or an internal all-hands at a membership body will typically contain, at the same time, three people who know the subject better than the speaker and thirty who need the argument in a paragraph. Pitch to the specialists and you lose the room; pitch to the room and the specialists stop trusting you before the second slide. Almost every engagement here turns out to be about that trade, and the answer is structural rather than a matter of confidence.

The second feature is durability. Words said here have a way of outliving the meeting — into a newsletter, a member update, a transcript, a clip. Leaders who do well have usually stopped improvising the sentences that matter and started deciding them in advance, which sounds like a loss of spontaneity and in practice reads as authority.

How the sessions run

Sessions run over video, and for this kind of work that has an incidental advantage: a great deal of what we would rehearse — the briefing, the panel appearance, the recorded remarks — now happens through a camera anyway, so the practice conditions and the real conditions match. Where a company brings the team together for an in-person day, we travel for that, and the cost of doing so is quoted up front rather than absorbed into a rate.

Conferences, panels and the room in between

For an annual meeting, a plenary or a member-facing keynote, public speaking coaching is the right starting point, and panel and moderator work is a regular part of it — being interesting in ninety seconds, and running a panel so that the other four people are interesting too.

For a leadership team that presents constantly to boards, funders and members, presentation skills coaching runs as a group program. And where the issue is that a capable person is not yet being read as senior, executive presence coaching addresses it directly — including how you come across, which is the competency people most often mean when they say somebody is not quite there yet.

Companies We've Coached

Last Thursday at my all-hands meeting, I used the techniques that I had learned from Laurie… I got a call from one of our utilization management medical directors right after the webinar who told me, “not even 50 words came out of your mouth, and I knew that this was going to be an excellent presentation.
